Ethical Guidelines For Psychology (or Medical) Blogs and Websites

internet_www_purpleFew would disagree that the internet has forever changed how patients obtain health and wellness information. Healthcare-related sites run by psychologists, physicians, or other professionals are more and more common today. In many cases, these websites provide valuable information to patients; however, practitioners face new challenges to remain within the ethical bounds of their profession, especially for psychologists, when communicating on the internet. For example, does a dual relationship exist if a patient signs up to receive email updates from their psychologist’s healthcare website? The Texas Psychological Association (TPA) recently posted a review of “blogging ethics” entitled, “Psychology Blogs: Ethical and Management Issues” by Brian D. Carr, Ph.D. Check the end of this report for a link to Dr. Carr’s article.

Dr. Carr’s review discusses the current challenges (and benefits) that licensed practitioners face when maintaining a healthcare website or blog. In short, the author points out that psychologists are bound to many of the same principals that guide clinical practice when communicating over the internet. These include confidentiality, discussion of topics that are within the bounds of expertise, and professional respect for others. Clearly distinguishing between professional and personal opinions and the need to provide references (when appropriate) are also emphasized. Dr. Carr further suggests that professionals visit the Healthcare Blogger Code of Ethics for added guidance. Of course, practitioners will want to first consider their particular state licensing board and professional organizations’ rules and ethical guidelines.

On a side note: I am very pleased to tell you that The Behavioral Medicine Report appears to meet all standards proposed by the Healthcare Blogger Code of Ethics after I added a financial disclosure statement. In fact, I have applied to be accepted by this organization, and their decision will be announced when available.
