The Senate returned from recess on April 12 and voted 60-34 to end debate (invoke cloture) and move forward with consideration of the Continuing Extension Act of 2010 (H.R. 4851). The bill includes a provision that would postpone the 21.2% Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) cut, which took effect on April 1, retroactively through April 30.
All 56 Democrats present and 4 Republicans – Senators Susan Collins (ME), Olympia Snowe (ME), Scott Brown (MA) and George Voinovich (OH) – came together to reach the needed 60-vote threshold. Your calls over the past two weeks have kept this critical issue on the minds of Senators and made an important difference. The chamber is expected to hold a final vote on the measure later this week and send it to the President.
Once Congress has completed action on the one-month measure, our work will continue to keep up the pressure for a long-term solution to this untenable situation for the Medicare program.
We will keep you posted.
