Book Review: Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA) (with discount code)

front cover of Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA): Basic Concepts and Clinical ApplicationsDr. Rex Cannon and BMED Press teamed up and “hit a homerun” with publication of Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA): Basic Concepts and Clinical Applications (released February 2012).

In seven chapters that span several hundred pages, including 58 pages of references, Dr. Cannon provides an introduction to LORETA and a specific step-by-step “how to” set up and utilize LORETA (e.g., LORETA interface modules). This book appears to be the first published manual for LORETA. Additionally, Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA): Basic Concepts and Clinical Applications includes well documented chapters on the clinical application of quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG), neurofeedback, and LORETA neurofeedback. Clinical applications with an example case with LORETA neurofeedback provides additional clarity. Dr. Cannon finishes with an excellent review of Brodmann areas, functional neuroanatomy, and ethical considerations.

One of the many ways that this book excels is the amount of detail provided within each chapter. For instance, LORETA “screens” are illustrated as “power points” along with explanations and instructions. Similarly, graphics and data on Brodmann areas and functional neuroanatomy are excellent. The graphics are presented in full color and most are fairly large. This makes for easy reading and eliminates the problems of discerning shades of grey that is common to other black and white QEEG/EEG books.

The chapters on QEEG and LORETA for depression, substance abuse, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) not only provide excellent summaries of research, but also include helpful examples. In addition, the chapter on LORETA neurofeedback (LNFB) utilizes power-point graphics to illustrate setting up LNFB protocols and regions of training.

Overall, I think Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA): Basic Concepts and Clinical Applications by Rex Cannon, PhD will be used as a manual for LORETA, a reference book in the library of most neurofeedback clinicians, and a likely textbook for neurofeedback training programs. I highly recommend this book for clinicians who use QEEG, LORETA, and/or neurofeedback.
