New findings from University of Utah School of Medicine (U of U) researchers show that the retrovirus called XMRV is not present in the blood of patients who have chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). These findings contradict a widely reported 2009 Science study that linked CFS to XMRV. The study, performed by a team of U of U researchers led by Ila R Singh, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of pathology, was published May 4, 2011, in the Journal of Virology online.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) Researchers Probe For Retrovirus In Central Nervous System

There has been substantial mystery surrounding the origins of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) – a condition affecting as many as four million Americans and marked by symptoms that include a sense of weariness that sleep does not improve and difficulty with memory and concentration. A study published in 2009 suggested that a retrovirus known as XMRV (xenotropic murine leukemia-related virus) was present in the blood of CFS patients, and that XMRV might be the cause.

A soon to be published study suggests that chronic fatigue syndrome is associated with an increased prevalence of maladaptive personality features and personality disorders. Researchers found that this might be associated with being non-compliant with treatment suggestions, displaying unhealthy behavioral strategies, and lacking a stable social environment. The results are to be published in the Journal of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) presents clinically as incapacitating physical and mental fatigue, frequently accompanied by unrefreshing sleep, impaired memory and concentration, and diffuse musculoskeletal pain. An absence of characteristic clinical signs or diagnostic laboratory abnormalities further create a diagnostic challenge. Adding to this complexity, the clinical picture of CFS is similar to that observed with [...]

Further Doubt Cast On A Virus Link To Chronic Fatigue

Virus

Researchers investigating UK samples have found no association between the controversial xenotropic murine leukaemia virus-related virus (XMRV) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Their study, published in BioMed Central’s open access journal Retrovirology, calls into question a potential link described late last year by an American research team.
