NIH_ADHD_ebook“Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder” (ADHD) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a free, full color 28 page ebook. This ebook provides answers to common questions posed by the recently diagnosed and by parents of children with ADHD. As with all NIH publications, an evidenced-based explanation of the disorder and its available treatment options is given in simple language that is suitable for the general public and for psychologists/physician handouts to their patients. Check the end of this review for a link to download this free PDF ebook.

“Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder” initially elaborates on common ADHD symptoms with clear descriptions of hyperactive and impulsive behaviors and the different diagnostic subtypes. The author then explains several potential causes of ADHD that include genes, environment, sugar, brain injuries, and food additives. In terms of treatment options, medications receive prominent coverage as they do in all NIH publications; however, the potential dangers and side effects of stimulant medication are adequately detailed. Talk therapies, or psychotherapy, for children receive decent attention with an emphasis on behavior therapy and social skills training along with advice on how parents can help their child. Treatment options discussed for adults include medications, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and psychoeducation.

Hopefully the NIH adds neurofeedback as a viable treatment option in future editions given the recent influx of research that demonstrates its safe and effective treatment of ADHD. For example, read the recent articles published on this website: “Neurofeedback for ADHD Achieves A Level 5 Efficacious and Specific Efficacy Rating” and “Children With ADHD Realize Significant Benefits From Neurofeedback Training In a Randomized Clinical Trial.”
