BMED Report previously featured a free learning website in Academic Earth Offers Free Video Lectures From Prestigious Universities and Scholars. Today, your attention is called to the Open Courseware Consortium (OCC). The OCC is made up of 200 participating educational institutions that span more than 30 countries who offer free online educational courses. The catch with open education? You benefit from the knowledge, but do not earn course credit or a formal degree.
The Open Courseware Consortium describe themselves as:
“An OpenCourseWare is a free and open digital publication of high quality educational materials, organized as courses. The OpenCourseWare Consortium is a collaboration of more than 200 higher education institutions and associated organizations from around the world creating a broad and deep body of open educational content using a shared model. The mission of the OpenCourseWare Consortium is to advance education and empower people worldwide through opencourseware.”
OCC members from the United States include such great institutions as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), UC Berkeley, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, University of Michigan, and University of Notre Dame. I found courses at various universities on a diverse range of topics like medicine, psychology, food safety, horse management, disaster preparedness, and physics. UC Berkley features psychology courses in General Psychology, Psychology of Dreams, and Clinical Psychology, and the University of Michigan offer courses from their medical school.
It is apparent that humans have entered a new era of education where anyone with the time and patience and an internet connection can learn about anything they desire – for free.
