TBI_model_systemsThe Model System Knowledge Translation Center is a great traumatic brain injury (TBI) resource not only for clinicians, but also for patients and their families. Model Systems provides these documents free of charge and can be viewed or downloaded online. The evidence-based TBI information is written in a straightforward manner that keeps “doctor speak” in check. Go to the end of this review for a link to The Model System Knowledge Translation Center for Traumatic Brain Injury.

The Model System Knowledge Translation Center publishes important and relevant papers on common difficulties experienced after a TBI and the stages of rehabilitation, including individual function, the impact on family members, sleep, driving, cognitive and emotional problems, fatigue, and altered states of consciousness. For an even more detailed overview of altered states of consciousness that follow a TBI you can read “Classification of Severe Alterations In Consciousness In Moderate To Severe Traumatic Brain Injury“.

I use these Model Systems’ articles regularly for patient education purposes on my TBI internship rotation at a rehabilitation hospital. Patients are given these handouts in individual and group therapy meetings for later review in their hospital room with family and friends.. This is important because most patients with TBI have significant memory problems which limits how much they can learn in a single therapy session.

Enjoy.
