nimh_mentalhealthmedications_publication_coverKeeping up with the latest research on mental health medications and their side effects can be a difficult proposition for psychologists since in most states they are not allowed to prescribe. The National Institute of Mental Health recently released a “Mental Health Medications” as a free 30 page PDF e-book. The e-book is clearly written and organized with coverage of medications for major depression, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, and ADHD, as well as alternative medications, if available, for these disorders.

“Mental Health Medications” is a great resource that clinicians can provide to patients when discussing the possibility of including psychotropic medication in their overall treatment plan. Each chapter includes relevant information about the various drugs commonly prescribed for each specific disorder, including generic/trade names, rare and common side effects, and FDA warnings. Although squarely aimed at the general public, psychologists may find this e-book to be a useful “quick reference guide” to current medication treatment options.
