newspaperThe National Institutes of Health (NIH) News service recently announced in a press release* that approximately $60 million will be committed to future Autism research. Funds are being received through The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The grants will be issued under the name, “Research to Address the Heterogeneity in Autism Spectrum Disorders,” to encourage research from diverse perspectives.

NIH provided example research topics, such as, “…developing and testing diagnostic screening tools for different populations; assessing risk from prenatal or early life exposures; initiating clinical trials to test early interventions; or adapting existing, effective pediatric treatments for older children, teens, and adults with ASD.” Researchers that receive funding through the ARRA are expected to contribute their data to the National Database for Autism Research (NDAR). The NIH also urged Autism researchers to apply for these grants.
