psychological_treatment_at_officeI want to share 10 free online resources that can help clinicians improve their evidence-based decision making. Some of the resources are more common, while others may be new to you. Each resource listed also includes a short blurb directly from its website. As most clinicians know, evidence-based treatment planning is becoming more and more important, particularly in the modern day healthcare system funded mostly by insurance companies. Psychologists also have an ethical duty to provide the very best level of patient care that is consistent with established research. However, to keep up with the enormous volume of psychological and medical research can be overwhelming, expensive, and time consuming. In fact, this is one of the primary reasons why I created The Behavioral Medicine Report: to help clinicians track important developments in health psychology/behavioral medicine research.

Here are the 10 free evidence-based online resources in no particular order:

  1. The Cochrane Library – “The Cochrane Library contains high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making. It includes reliable evidence from Cochrane and other systematic reviews, clinical trials, and more. Cochrane reviews bring you the combined results of the world’s best medical research studies, and are recognized as the gold standard in evidence-based health care.”
  2. Trip Database – “The Internet’s leading resources for Evidence-Based Medicine. Allowing users to rapidly identify the highest quality clinical evidence for clinical practice.”
  3. Pubmed – “A service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine that includes over 18 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to 1948. PubMed includes links to full text articles and other related resources.”
  4. Evidenced Based Behavioral Practice – “…creates training resources to help bridge the gap between behavioral health research and practice. Professionals from the major health disciplines are collaborating to learn, teach, and implement evidence-based behavioral practice (EBBP)”
  5. National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) – “…is a searchable database of interventions for the prevention and treatment of mental and substance use disorders. SAMHSA has developed this resource to help people, agencies, and organizations implement programs and practices in their communities.”
  6. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) – “The mission of NIMH is to transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery and cure.”
  7. National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence – “…is the independent organization responsible for providing national guidance on the promotion of good health and the prevention and treatment of ill health.”
  8. Cochrane Behavioral Medicine Field – “…to increase and improve the evidence-base of behavioral medicine interventions through the facilitation of collaborations between behavioral medicine society affiliates and Cochrane Review Group affiliates.
  9. Treatment Research Institute – “…is a not-for-profit research and development organization dedicated to reducing the devastating effects of alcohol and other drug abuse on individuals, families and communities by employing scientific methods and disseminating evidence-based information.”
  10. The Behavioral Medicine Report – what evidence-based list would not be complete without The Behavioral Medicine Report?

Enjoy.
